Sermon Title: Seek God Diligently, Sincerely, and Earnestly to Find Him
Opening Scripture:
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” — Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
Introduction
Every human heart longs for God, though many try to fill that longing with other things—success, possessions, relationships, or pleasures. Yet the Word of God tells us plainly that if we want to find God truly, it must be done with diligence, sincerity, and earnestness. The Lord is not hidden from us to frustrate us, but to draw us into a relationship of wholehearted pursuit.
1. Diligently Seek God
Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Diligence implies persistence, consistency, and perseverance.
- Proverbs 8:17 — “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”
- Psalm 63:1 — “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.”
Application:
To be diligent means making seeking God a priority—through daily prayer, reading His Word, fasting, worship, and consistent fellowship with other believers. It means we don’t give up even when distractions and trials come.
2. Sincerely Seek God
God is not fooled by half-hearted prayers or empty religious rituals. He looks at the heart.
- Jeremiah 29:13 — “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
- 2 Chronicles 15:15 — “And all Judah rejoiced at the oath: for they had sworn with all their heart, and sought him with their whole desire; and he was found of them: and the LORD gave them rest round about.”
Application:
Seeking God sincerely means coming before Him with honesty, humility, and transparency. It means confessing sin, dropping pretenses, and desiring Him above all else.
3. Earnestly Seek God
Earnestness carries the sense of intensity and passion. It is seeking God as though our life depends on it—because it does.
- Psalm 42:1–2 — “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?”
- Matthew 6:33 — “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Application:
Earnestly seeking God means prioritizing Him above everything else—our careers, ambitions, and even our daily needs. Jesus Himself showed this by rising early to pray (Mark 1:35) and teaching us to hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6).
4. The Promise of Finding God
When we seek Him diligently, sincerely, and earnestly, the promise of Scripture is clear: we shall find Him.
- Deuteronomy 4:29 — “But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.”
- James 4:8 — “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
Application:
God is not far from us. Acts 17:27 says He wants us to “seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us.” The reward is His presence, His peace, His power, and eternal life in Christ.
Conclusion
The call of God is clear: Seek Me, and you will find Me. He is a rewarder, but not of the casual seeker. He rewards the diligent, the sincere, and the earnest.
Let us therefore examine our pursuit of God. Is it half-hearted, distracted, or inconsistent? Or is it marked by diligence, sincerity, and earnestness?
The promise still stands: “You shall find Him when you seek Him with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13).
Call to Action / Prayer
- Lord, give us hearts that hunger and thirst after You.
- Teach us to seek You early, consistently, and with sincerity.
- Let us not grow weary in pursuing You, but find the reward of Your presence and peace.
Amen.
