CHRIST JESUS IN THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK
SERMON TITLE:
CHRIST JESUS IN THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK
Opening Scripture
Psalm 110:4 (KJV)
“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
INTRODUCTION
Beloved in Christ, the foundation of our faith is not built on the Aaronic priesthood, which was temporary and earthly, but on a higher and eternal priesthood—the Order of Melchizedek. Jesus Christ does not minister through the blood of animals or by hereditary right. He ministers by divine appointment, eternal life, and heavenly authority. To understand the power of the New Covenant, we must understand the order in which Christ operates.
1. MELCHIZEDEK: THE PATTERN REVEALED (GENESIS 14)
Genesis 14:18–20 (KJV)
“And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.”
Key Truths
- King of Salem (Peace) and Priest of the Most High God—a royal priesthood.
- Bread and wine, prophetic symbols pointing to Christ’s body and blood.
- Abraham, the father of faith, received blessing from Melchizedek, showing Melchizedek’s superiority.
- Abraham paid tithes, acknowledging a higher priesthood before the Law.
2. A PRIESTHOOD ESTABLISHED BY OATH (PSALM 110:4)
Psalm 110:4 (KJV)
“The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Revelation
- This priesthood is declared by God’s oath, not by Mosaic Law.
- It is eternal, not seasonal or generational.
- David prophesied of a Messiah who would be both King and Priest, something the Aaronic system could never allow.
3. CHRIST APPOINTED AS HIGH PRIEST (HEBREWS 5)
Hebrews 5:5–6 (KJV)
“So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Insight
- Jesus did not assume priesthood—He was appointed by the Father.
- His priesthood flows from sonship, not genealogy.
- His priesthood is forever.
4. A FORERUNNER WITHIN THE VEIL (HEBREWS 6)
Hebrews 6:19–20 (KJV)
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast…
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
Meaning
- Aaronic priests could not remain behind the veil.
- Jesus entered the Holy of Holies once and for all.
- He went ahead of us as our forerunner, guaranteeing access to God.
5. THE SUPERIORITY OF THE MELCHIZEDEK PRIESTHOOD (HEBREWS 7)
a. Without Genealogy
Hebrews 7:3 (KJV)
“Without father, without mother, without descent… but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.”
This priesthood is not based on ancestry, unlike Aaron’s.
b. Greater Than Levi
Hebrews 7:9–10 (KJV)
“And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham.”
Levi acknowledged Melchizedek’s superiority before he was born.
c. An Unchangeable Priesthood
Hebrews 7:24 (KJV)
“But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.”
Aaron’s sons died; Christ lives forever.
d. Perfect Salvation
Hebrews 7:25 (KJV)
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him…”
This priesthood guarantees complete redemption.
6. A CHANGE OF PRIESTHOOD, A CHANGE OF SYSTEM
Hebrews 7:12 (KJV)
“For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.”
Implication
- The Aaronic priesthood has been fulfilled.
- No more animal sacrifices.
- No more earthly mediators.
- Christ alone is our High Priest.
7. CHRIST OPERATES IN THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK
Jesus Christ:
- Ministers by grace, not ritual
- Reigns as King and Priest
- Intercedes eternally
- Gives believers direct access to God
Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace…”
CONCLUSION
Beloved, Jesus Christ does not operate in the order of Aaron. He reigns in the Order of Melchizedek—eternal, royal, and perfect.
What the Law could not complete, Christ finished forever.
Let us rest in His finished work and walk boldly in the privileges of this heavenly priesthood.
Closing Scripture
Hebrews 7:28 (KJV)
“But the word of the oath… maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.”
